Penn Jetstream FAO Old smoothhound & Devon Dave

Hello guys,

Regarding the Penn Jetstream I just took delivery of one from veals and under close scrutiny found a problem with ring 2 on section 3. Bubbling on the finish and a large piece of material like thin rubber attached to the blank and emerging from the whipped area. The whole rod did not really have the perfection finish as say my ABU does. Certainly not typical of something that carrys the PPT marque.

Phoned Penn and emailed Gary the manager with some pics and he was horrified saying that the whole rod must go back to him and will be replaced commpletely. He seemed shocked as he said it was a flagship rod and should never have left the factory in that condition. They did promise some line as compensation so I asked for a 525 reel but that was met with a laugh!

I doubt that Penns QC is bad all the time but if you do get one spend some time and study it in detail.

The carry tube is excellent, very strong and covered in cloth with a zip top and the Penn tag. Will easily go in the car and even more room would be made if you just travel with it in the bag rather than in the tube.

Will post back when the replacement gets here and definately after a day testing it out which will match it to an ABU 6500 sports mag.

Regards

Re: Penn Jetstream FAO Old smoothhound & Devon Dave

Got the replacement back from Penn and no issues with the new one, quick turnround from them and they gave me 3 huge spools of 15, 18 and 20 line plus a very nice Penn cap for my trouble.

You can see where the money goes, top quality blank, very strong but very light . Fittings are superb and the 4 sections go together very well. Each section is 105cm and goes into the purpose made rod bag.

The whole lot goes into a 115cm plastic tube ( Padded ends ) that is cloth cothered has a zip top with Penn tag, adjustable carry handle and clear plastic pouch for a name tag. The rod will easily go into an overhead locker of a plane and into any car boot, and left just in the rod bag hardly any space is used.

Considering its quality and pedigree and the meagre amount of room it uses up I can envisage this rod becoming the number one choice for whatever occasion!. Still proof is in the pudding and I hope to test it thouroughly in the new year.

Regards to all.

Nice to see Penn reacted so quickly and you are now satisfied.

Have joined the Jetstream club, now the proud owner to 2... all i need is to get Dave the tripod maker to make me a "travelling" type tripod so then its all systems go for next years hols!

Ben,
The bad news is that these rods are about £175.

My philosophy after many years is sod it...

If you buy cheap you pay dearly.... so whenver i have saved my hard earned money for a new toy or toys and I have worked my ass off then I will buy what I want when I want. (So long as the wife dosen't know) But may have to have a garage sale in January....running out of room for all my rods.... definately need a clear out!
