Talking Bristol Channel cod fishing New Passage

Bristol Channel cod fishing New Passage

Sunday and I was heading down to New Passage for and evening fishing for cod

The team for the evenings cod fishing was wellyfish , kiwimarty, Old Smoothound and I (what a team)

I arrived at 2.30pm just behind wellyfish kiwimarty who had travelled up together

Like little boys on Xmas day we had arrived way too early for the 8pm tide but used the time to have a good look at the ground at low water. This is always highly recommended to do as you can see the gully’s and worm/ weed beds that you will be fishing over once the tide comes in

Half an hour later Old Smoothound arrives and a few jokes and a chat we move off the mark the out local guide / guru had selected for us to fish (Old Smoothound)

So with the trolley dollies in the lead (kiwimarty and I) we set off to the mark

Once there , we had another walk out to see if we could get some leads and to inspect the ground we would be fishing over

With sometime to go before the tide would be in we set up our rigs

Rigs – Pulley 0/2 – 0/3 hooks with 6oz grip leads
Bait - Rag / Lugworm and squid Plus a few peeler crab

Once all set up we sat around chatting for the next 3 hours which passed very quickly and the wind started to drop which took the chill out of the air

With one hour to go I heard a pop of a champagne cork and was invited to partake in champers and continental chocolate!! Wellyfish and kiwimarty certainly like to fish in style but that’s chiefs for you. With my toes now feeling a bit more normal we decided to walk too the up coming tide and cast out

Within about half an hour Old Smoothound had a nice little codling caught on three lug tipped with squid strip. We all thought to ourselves this is a good sign two hours before high tide – game on!!

Unfortunately that was about it for the evening fishing with Old Smoothound the only one getting any knocks , but as we decided that the tide was getting the better of us Old Smoothound had two more codlings ( mmm local boy does well )

New Passage fishing was a bit slow on the night but what a cracking night it was with great company and lots of laughter

As always fishing on your own is fun but even better when you can hook up with friends. I learnt how to set up my Penn with the help of Wellyfish which I know will but on the extra needed yards on my casting

So massive thanks for the guided service Old Smoothound and to Wellyfish kiwimarty for the great company and putting a new meaning of fishing in comfort

Cheers and very much look forward to the next one

Re: Bristol Channel cod fishing New Passage

Hey guys, I can tell ya the pleasure was all ours.
Had an absolute whale of a time..........unfortunately the only whales to be seen was a few miles across the water!!! Ohh bloody ripper!!!

It was a pleasure also, to be slightly up tide, nicely ground baiting smoothes swim!!
You can’t do enough for a good bloke can ya??

What a great way to spend an evening!!

Now for one really serious note.....
We were approached by some other fisherman and were informed that some anglers from a previous session had caught, killed, and then dumped four cod on the beach. They were simply left to rot.
I would like for it to be known that if I was to ever witness this happening, I would get my very sharp filleting knife, remove the offending people’s testicals and hand them to my bro Kev to cook with an appropriate sauce!

I witnessed a true fisherman at pains last night because his fish had swallowed the hook too deep and although he wished to return it, he felt it more humane to despatch it.
I would really like to think that these animals that leave fish on a beach to rot are in the minority!

How will we as fisherman be able to defend our sport when the anti cruel sports really start to get stuck in!! It’s only a matter of time.

Sorry if this takes the edge off a good thread and read but I felt it needed mentioning.

Kiwi.

Cool Re: Bristol Channel cod fishing New Passage

I'm with you on this one Marty,

Don't take what you can't eat and certainly don't discard fish as if they are rubbish. We will all be in big trouble if the "Antis" ever see this kind of thing going on in our sport.

Thank God these are isolated incidents (we hope) and if i ever see anyone doing it, i'll be there with a flambe pan, sweetbreads a la Wellyfish!!

Only sorry to sound off politicaly, but our sport really dosent need this kind of thing happening.
