OK, for Chesil, you need a couple of rods and reels. Decent beachcasters are the order of the day. You will need a tripod to keep the line out of the breakers. You will fish one out long and one in short. Chesil Beach has strong tides so you have to use grip leads of around 5 oz, going to 8oz on a roughish day. By roughish I mean only a force 4 SW.... that will still give you big breakers. Chesil is very deep almost immediatly. Currently plaice are fishing well at range, 80+ yds. Rag, Black Lug, with Mackeral and Squid to tip off are good bets. There is only one place to get your bait and that is Weymouth Angling. Top quality and super fresh, well priced and they are a great bunch of guys. Where to fish? Tough one that. Chesil is 17 miles long, so when you go into Weymouth Angling for your bait, ask them which marks are doing well at that time. Notable marks are West Bexington, Abbotsbury (my favourites), Ferry Bridge, The Adelaide wreck (only go if you can cast 120 metres consistently), The Landing Craft (same as the Adelaide) and the Oil Drums. You can catch pretty much any species from Chesil, depending on the season. Further to the west you can fish off Portland Bill, but be very aware of the weather here as it can get scary very quickly. Big wrasse are being brought in from Portland now. 5lb has been landed so far. That's a monster because they are the pit-bulls of the fish world. Hope this helps a little. Cheers Paul. EDIT: For terminal tackle go for some form of clip down rig for the long range stuff and maybe a 1up, 1 down for the close in stuff. If you want the plaice, fish on a 1/0 or size 2 hook. If bites are thin, drop to size 4. Add beads to hook lengths too. 4 or 5 red, yellow and black will do.

One other point to note. If it's blowing a Force 5 or 6 from the SW, don't even bother as it will be unfishable. I tried a few weeks back in a 6, and 8oz was been rolled all over the place. You'll never hold bottom. If there are breakers rolling in, you will have a job to tell whether the nods on the rod are bites or just the sea rocking the rod.

If you have a lot of gear with you don't plan to walk too far from where you have parked. Walking on shingle is tough enough without being loaded with gear. You will be knackered.

...tell me about it.! The time I fished the masters on Chesil, had rod holdall with 5 rods, 2 tripods and beach buddy attached, tackle box (thank God for them Breakaway back rests!) full... 3 bait buckets, fish bucket and cool box!! How the hell did I do that...? But , hey, thats match fishing, if you want to compete...you gotta be ready for anything
