| Re: how can i cast further off a pier as the big fish are always too far out 4 me? You dont need to - you can catch big fish straight down if you are lucky or even a simple 20/30 yard cast puts you in relativley deep water .... __________________ SUPPORT THE RNLI - click : www.rnli.org.uk ... every little helps ! | Re: how can i cast further off a pier as the big fish are always too far out 4 me? I take a group of kids on South Parade Pier during the summer and they quickly learn that even the bigger fish (bass and pollack) live under and in the ironworks and piles. It's a shame that some of the more experienced anglers insist on belting a couple of ragworm and 5oz to the horizon and more often than not miss any chance of a fish. The pier in question fished magically last May for much larger than usual pier pollack as per the TSF article which appeared in September's issue last year. ![]() The best way to learn to cast a long way is to spend an hour or so at a casting meet or with a qualified instructor available via the NFSA website or by calling Paul at Sea Angler on 01733 465638 for your nearest coach. Piers do not lend themselves to powerful casting techniques and you are better off with an underarm swing or an off the ground cast, paying attention to those around you. I think it was Terry Carroll (Zipplex) who created the 'Brighton Cast' for casting away from Brighton pier for cod back in the 60s. This is a very powerful cast which does not use a wide arc that can put bystanders at risk. |
