Well mate casting and retrieving sets of feathers is by far the most productive but real anglers dont do this unless getting bait

My favourite method is with a very very light spinning rod with about 8lb line .
On this i use a float and then usually and then fish a macky strip about 10ft down.
I make sure the strip iS no wider than 1/4 inch and about 2" long from the belly of a fish.
This all sounds more hassle then just thumping feathers out but believe me its a hell of a lot more fun and you will catch the bigger fish .
You can always spin with another rod whilst watching the float.
Good luck in the summer.

If you need to chuck a float a fair way out then use a heavy float, try to fish somewhere with deep water close in so you dont have to cast far.

Re: best Way To Catch Mackie From Shore

Bruddy 'ell .... what season is it?????

Here's one way to have fun with mackerel ....

If you do like catching them with a bit of sport involved, try this on a light (1 1/2lbs tc) carp rod and 8-10lbs line.
I make the floats out of balsa with lead inserts to overcome the casting problem; based on the carpy's dog biscuit presentation.
It works best in flat calm conditions from an open beach or rocks. Vary the shot according to the depth you are fishing.
You'll have to get used to the float running sideways rather than dipping under!

Apologies for the odd 'typo' ...
