Question about sea trout

Hi, Im a new member and probably making an idiot of myself but I wonder if anyone knows the rules regarding catching sea trout in the sea? I saw a 6 to 8 lb one being caught next to me last week on Babbacombe pier. The guy packed up and ran off with his specimen rather quickly. Was that because he was breaking the law? Someone said if you catch one it has to be registered somewhere. is that so?

Regards Foggy

to fish for sea trout you need a game licence as counted as game fish

Re: Question about sea trout

Well thanks for the help. But what if I am fishing for mackerel and catch a sea trout? Legaly can i buy a retrospective licence?

Perhaps fishy pauls idea of legging it quick is the more practical.

Yep, and the EA regulations re game fish apply for several miles (can't remember the exact figure) out to sea.

Re: Question about sea trout

If you catch a sea trout (or salmon) "accidently" while fishing for other species then it has to be returned. You are not allowed to deliberately target sea trout or salmon and you may have a problem convincing the authorities if you were fly fishing an estuary mouth with common salmon or sea trout fly patterns. However, there is always a chance that spinning or using worm you would pick them up - just make sure that they go back in if you do.

Re: Question about sea trout

Well thanks for all the help. As I see it the situation is that if I accidentaly catch a sea trout then I call it a mackerel and do a runner.

It applies out to the six mile limit in England and Wales.
