Beachcaster novice needs advice

Hi,

I was wondering if any of you could offer me some advice? I have been fishing for many years from rocks and boats but I would like to try Beachcasting. What sort of rod should I go for? Length etc. and I was thinking of a multiplier but I have read a few reviews and am not sure if I should go for a Level wind or not. What are the advantages of both. Is there a particular manufacturer that would be best? I have seen Slosh, Millionare and Ambassadeur mentiod alot but there is many different types of both? All advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Nifisher.

P.S. If anyone could recommend good spots in N.Ireland or Donegal that would be great too!!

Abu are 1 of the best for multipliers, level wind is easier but you cant cast as far with them so most people prefer without (easy to get used to)

hi nifisher

its really a question of horses for courses.

what conditions will you be using the rod in, rough broken ground, flat beaches size of fish, distance you need to cast....in the absence of this info i'd go for a 4oz-6oz casting rod of 12 foot in length with maybe going upto a 6oz-8oz for heavier ground.

reels.......the abu 6000 size is a good reel with or without a level wind - you can get used to the reel without a level wind with a couple of hours casting practice over the local park, just remember you have to spread the line yourself while retrieving.

another reel to consider is the pen 525 mag, wouldn't be without mine, love it and super fast retrieve...can be a bit lively though.
the slosh is another heavy ground reel but like the 525 casts well and is bullet proof...not much good if you have small thumbs but an excellent casting reel.

Re: Beachcaster novice needs advice

I would like to be able to use it off the rocks local to me for Doggy I think it is quite rough ground but also would like to use it off the beach. I am after something to cover both angles if possible. I was thinking 4 to 6oz as I wont be fishing huge tides (I dont think). As for size of fish ???? I am not sure I know there are some quite big doggy from therocks locally but I am going to have to travel for the beaches. I am not sure really what to expect there Probably small to medium flatties and doggy I fished these a long time ago at thats what was around then but that maybe was because my casting was not up to much!! Distance the further the better then I can choose would that make sense?

Thanks for your help so far!

Re: Beachcaster novice needs advice

sounds like its for general beach/rock fishing in which case i'd get a 4oz-8oz casting rod this will allow you to fish quite easily with 6ozs of weight and have plenty in reserve for belting a big bait out.

reels i'd go for a 6000 size reel that can cope with the rough stuff but without being a winch....slosh's 525 and abu's will all surfice.

hope this helps

john

Re: Beachcaster novice needs advice

ou could try the apollo mk1 if you can get hold of one second hand and in good condition zippy also make superb rods that will cope with that sort of ground .

Re: Beachcaster novice needs advice

The 6000 Abu's are not the best reels for rough ground (great for clean beaches though). Go for a Penn 525 Mag or a Daiwa slosh 20. If you can stretch for it take a look at the Penn 525 Supermag extra. The penn will be fine for the beach as well.
