Re: Any suggestions on Fixed Spool Reels for Shore duties

Hi Jason,

I think Dave's spot on about Shimano. I've got several for coarse fishing including some elderly baitrunners and they're all going strong.

I bought a Shimano Ultegra XSA 10,000 a few months ago. It's a lovely reel but the price made my eyes water a bit. It comes with one shallow and one deeper spool so I've put 20lb braid on the shallow and 15lb mono on the deeper one. They both cast well and so far I haven't cracked off the braid on this reel ( I did several times on another make of fixed spool because the braid seemed to come off in loops and get caught on the first ring).

Shimano gets my vote.

Had a Diawa millionex 9,000 for 17 years now, they make excellent reels ,but for me it has to be the shimano, had a aerlex about ten years and although the model is now old you will not go wrong.
Rob is right about the Okuma though,he s hammered his and its still going strong.

Lads, might be a stupid question but looking on ebay theres lots of reels described as carp reels, are these ok for sea fishing, is there any difference ?
