Totally new to bass fishing

I am totally new to bass fishing, well just about totally new to sea fishing in general as I spent years just Carp fishing.

Anyway I have the idea of just plugging or spinning for bass this summer, keeping mobile with just a small rucksack, and trying new locations as the weeks go by, always releasing the fish.

So…..I have my 10ft telescopic spinning rod, fixed spool reel, 12Lb line, Rapala J13s, Abu Tobys, various surface poppers and shallow diving rattling lures etc…etc…I’m ready!

Read fabulous article at http://www.worldseafishing.com/luref...ing_bass.shtml

So I am after more advice and would appreciate any of your tips or views on:

Bass Season? Is there one? Weather?
Good locations along the south coast? Bad locations?
Tides?
Harbour? Surf? Fast moving inlets? Mud flats?
Your experiences of lure fishing for Bass?
Anything?

Thanks
Rob

Re: Totally new to bass fishing

Welcome first of all and looking forward to your posts

Right far from knowing I will get the ball rolling......

So I am after more advice and would appreciate any of your tips or views on:

Bass Season? Is there one? Weather?
Well its change and you can now get bass almost all year round , for the shore side of things it great to target bass after a good blow as the beach / rock marks get a pounding thus more food...

Good locations along the south coast? Bad locations?
Not my area as have only gone for them whilst wreck fishing although can normally pick up a few whilst shore fishing on the lure. One thing I think is important is not to think to far as bass work close in ( chassing bait fish / working gullys ) . If you see mackeral working an area then sure bet that below them will be bass.

Tides?
Really depends on the marks mate

Harbour? Surf? Fast moving inlets? Mud flats?
As said before not great at bass fishing but... Bass hunt fish ; so think like a fish. If you where a little fish where would you hang out ( safe places like rock gullys / gorings ect

Your experiences of lure fishing for Bass?
Done abit ... Well with any lure fishing remember to work the lure ... vary the speed whilst reeling in .... jerk the rod tip ect .. fish hunt on easy pray and a fish ( lure ) that looks in trouble is an easy meal . If you do get a hit do not stop reeling in ...

THe real bass men will chip in later but just hought I would get the ball rolling

Re: Totally new to bass fishing

Welcome to the site mate and i look forward to reading your posts and reports!!

Im sorry that im not going to be able to help you on this subject as im not really a bass man and when i am its normally with live baits such as smelt bream wrasse and Joey's so i think i would be waisting you time in replying.

I see Rich has given some topnotch advice there so thats a start! (nice info mate)

Good luck with the bassing and i hope you get all the info you need from the great collection of anglers we have on here!

Ollie.

Re: Totally new to bass fishing

Hey fella welcome to the site , Never fished for bass with plugs/spinners either looking forward to take it up this year. All of my bassing has been done with live or dead baits mate. from what i can make out theres plenty of good marks to fish around the south/south-east coast mate. I'm sure the spinning experts on here will put you straight!!

Re: Totally new to bass fishing

Personally I have found Bass in every situation you mentioned! I lure fish for bass of cliff edges, harbour entrances, lagoons, and open waters. The flood of the tide apears to be the most productive and the ebb can also provide sport!
Christchurch in Dorset down to chesil beach is great because of the variety of fishing spots.
Fishing just after a good wash, is great because of the amount of food churned up in it!
With regards to tackle, my best tip is to upgrade (when you can afford to) to Braid. It gives you less stretch than mono, and that provides better feedback to the rod tip! You can feel every movement of the lure, and any bites!
Hope this helps!
Great to see you are releasing the fish!

Re: Totally new to bass fishing

yeah i think the braid is good advise! i switched over from mono to
braid years back for plugging pike, with a spinning rod, bass rod or anything with a fast tip! you know that every movement you make is translated directly to the lure!
so you can visualise the dieing panicky fake fish!(your lure) and get a bit
imaginative about it, as you work it! diving, wobbling, floating, diving, stopping and changing direction ! much like a bait fish in real trouble!
a nice soft target/free meal ticket for a passing predator!!!!!

have to say getting it right and projecting your self into the lure is nearly as good as catching somthing on it, but im weird like that! lol

Re: Totally new to bass fishing

Hi Guys,

How do you tie your braid off on a a plug to get working correctly.
On mono i use the rapala knot, which works exellently, athough you have to do one everytime you change over.

I know that there are several diff lure links but i have not used any yet.
So best ask them in know.

Thxs in reply.
Neil

Lightbulb Re: Totally new to bass fishing

good to hear from another convert to Bass angling!
my advice is to first buy 'Hooked on Bass' by Mike Ladle it really is the bible of bass angling. Every time you you re-read you find another gem of info. The next thing is to look at the Bass Anglers Sportfishing Society Website www.ukbass.co.uk.
as far as the fishin goes try as many venues as possible at as many states of the tide as possible. generally dawn and night time are best. at night do not use lights near the water at all.
good luck
oh and keep a diary with as much info as possible in it even about the blanks.
