What lures?

I have tried to get into bass fishing with no luck and was wondering if it was the lures i have.

Can anyone recomend lures and the prices for me please.

What lures are you using TJ? The lure I've used in the past and caught bass and pollack with by trolling behind a boat is the 13cm black & silver Rapala Sliver. A number of people I know swear by these. I think the best time to use them is when there are a lot of sand-eels around for the bass to feed on. You can pick them up for £9.61 each plus £1.50 postage at www.fishingbig.com This is the cheapest place I know to get them. Someone else on the forum might be able to suggest another source though. The RRP is £12.98. They do come up on ebay from time to time but don't go for much less than this - in fact I've occasionally seen them go for more when you add on the postage.

I use a plug that Kev put me onto. There is a small shop in Newton Abbot that sells them. Please give him a pm as to what it’s called. Meanwhile, I suggest you use a Rapala J11 B or a J9 B. These are jointed floating/diving plugs best used for spinning from rocks and the like or for shallow inshore work if using on a boat.

The J stands for the pattern and the number for the length in cm. The B stands for the colour.

In Torbay Angling the J11 B is in stock and is selling for around £11 or £12.

Never forget too, the well known Dexter Wedge (available from Braid Direct linked from this site). Kev and I swear by them. Use the 28gm or above and give them plenty of action.

Your right, they are bloody expensive for what they are. When your line snaps and you see twelve quid sailing off into the sunset, it hurts.
As usual we poor downtrodden Brits are being conned. Just why oh why cant we make such a simple item here?

I was born in Redditch and when i was a lad Redditch was the world centre for fine fishing tackle, Great names like allcock and sealey had their factories there, hardly a household didnt have someone tying hooks to nylon as homework.

Now although some names remain its all made in china on the grounds of cost. but for gods sake at twelve pounds i would have thought we could churn em out by the million for a couple of quid.

Ok we were poor, but we were happy, we lived int paper bag int middle of road, eeee ba gum those were the days, my dad would beat us sensless and then send us out tut work int mills for a penny a year. One Christmas we had real gravy.

I've fished Dorset rocky coastline for about ten years! Lost my best popper lure yesterday, due to line management.
For an all rounder, the Rapala Saltwater X-Rap in Brown/Silver seems the most productive to me. Dives to about 2-4 metres, depending on the retrieval. This lure has caught fish, in the roughest of Portland weather, when the water is white with surf!
Also Yo-zuri Crystal Minnows are great, same basic design. Gives a slashing action in the water.
Both these have great casting distance, which I think gives a better catch rate.
These retail for around £9.99, but the Yo-zuri's are harder to come by. (made in Japan)

If the water is still and calm, the popper is the way forward. My recent lost was a Mackerel Popper from Storm. This lure was'nt much to look at, due to scratches/eye missing etc. It did however account for the main part of my catches. (£5.99)

I must state, If you can, use Braid. This gives you better feeling, more responsiveness and a greater chance of landing a fish in the rough weather!
