Advice on fly fishing.

I live in Falmouth and spend a fair bit of time fishing for bass, mainly spinning or plugging and a bit of float fishing with live bait. I want to have a go at fly fishing (for bass) but haven’t got a clue as to what gear is needed or what flies are best. I’ve seen trays advertised to hold line to prevent it being washed away in the surf so does this mean that you can fly fish off the beach and cast a fly into the wind. Are the flies weighted and if so do they then sink. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Advice on fly fishing.

Hi Cedar, Smoothie is the best person to answer this in detail but it is something I have intended trying for the past year. I bought myself a rod last year with the aim of trying but haven't had the opportunity yet. I bought a freshwater rod rated 7/8 wt and a large arbor reel to match. The flies I have are clousers on size two hooks and are weighted so will assist with casting into the wind but it is probably worth getting some casting practice in so that you are confident that you can get a fly out there. There's a thread with more information on the fly fishing part of this site and I'm sure our fly fishing guru will be on here shortly with some more advice. I'm hoping to try for mackie on the fly shortly too and maybe mullet although from what I hear that's just a quick route to sending yourself mad!

Re: Advice on fly fishing.

Thanks for the reply. I've been looking at Veals site and they list a video on saltwater fly fishing, think I'll get that and take it from there.
