A bass' traditional haunt?

Having got a taste for bass now (well, I eat it tomorrow actually) I'm wondering what the usual habitat for bass is? I know now that river channels are good, if illegal.... So would like to try somewhere a little less illegal next time.

My mate now wants a rapala after seeing what mine caught, and it seems trolling with the speedboat at about 3 or 4 knots makes the rapala do its "thing" the best.

If small fish are in the river Teign, is there a good likelihood of bigger ones outide the river mouth, maybe in the area around that sand spit we saw the waves crashing over yesterday? Also, maybe around the headland heading out down toward Torbay direction?

Obviously if there's secret shore marks, I'd love to know, but wouldn't expect public disclosure of the top marks.

Another thing is casting these rapala's - I should think it would be a right bugger to cast one into a headwind, as they're so light. Anyone else here use weights to assist, without it/them affecting the travel wobble on the retrieve?

You need to do some research regarding where you can fish for bass in or around the mouth of the Teign from a boat. I have never paid much attention as I don't boat fish, but I read somewhere that you can't fish at the mouth either. Best thing to do is put your boat away and try and fish from the shore at the same place you caught your beauty!

As far as weighting your lure, I have heard that the best thing to do is to get a clear plastic bubble float and put it at least 6' up the line from the lure so it doesn't stop it "doin' it's ting" as they say in the ghettos. This also stops it spooking the bass.

I shall now reveal that this is all from reading stuff, as I've never caught a bass on a lure!!!!! Sounded like I knew what I was talking about, didn't it?
