bass on the fly, west cornwall

I've just joined the forum and live near St Ives, Cornwall; I fancy having a go at bass on the fly in the local area this summer. If anyone can give me a hint as to marks, times (of year, day and tide) I would appreciate it. I have suitable gear, just need a nudge in the right direction as I haven't done any sea fishing locally.

Talking Re: bass on the fly, west cornwall

Hi my first post.

I live in st ives and have been catching bass here for well over ten years.

Average 6-7 lbs (anything under 4lbs gets a kiss and released) largest 11lbs on the dot.

The schoolies are catchable in the surf between 1st and 3rd wave on the sand bar entrance to hayle estuary on 1/2 hr before and after low tide on the stinkiest murky day slight wind.

the monsters or quality fish are off godrevy cove middle of the beach on a SW wind force 5-6 in the surf again between 2nd and 5th wave (be sure there is a good white crest to the waves and theyre leaving slight foam.
Hold on to your rod nice and tight and dont slacken off. 1 hr before low tide til 1/2 after. dusk only.

PLEASE PLEASE only take what your going to eat and dont kill em off.

At both locations use a nice 2-4 inch green tailed tinseled feather with gold flecks. sinking with good clean jerks and concentrate. Theyre there and youll see them from 2nd week june until late sept. larger ones in spurts there one day then gone for two weeks or more.

If you catch a fish tagged then please weigh it and record its tag number and private message me.

sorry dont give out my phone number. probably see you down there.

i fly and live bait. Fly wins the day every time.

good luck and please whatch your sizing. if there small put them back and if you get a few small the biggens next so be patient.

Re: bass on the fly, west cornwall

Many thanks for that info hooklinensinker- I'll be back in Carbis Bay mid June and will be out there in suitable conditions from then for a few weeks . Is the Hayle Bar best fished from Lelant or the Hayle side? All I need to do now is get my somewhat rusty double hall into gear!
