Re: what reels?

little i always big up okuma they are great reels only snobbery keeps them below the bigger names ,saying that they are massive in america i had 3 original okuma epx carp runners when they first came out after getting fed up of my dodgy shimano baitrunner problems my nephew has em now still mint and still catching fish 10 bearings 2 ally spools with brass lip and two drags front and rear great baitrunner and sexy looking ,,,i uses 3 okuma nitrix 400 multipliers people have tried em who have abu reels and are amazed same size and weight though i have took off level wind system was going to buy a couple of daiwa slosh when they break but 3 years and they still magic drag is great and they are smooth as silk ,,thats what i look for in a reel quality and price not the badge

Re: what reels?

well ended up getting Shakespeare salt 70 and mitchel 387
Shakey reel is great but no anti reverse so the drag needs to be set properly.
The mitchel is old and knackered but i only paid a fiver for it and it needed some work on the bail trip mechinism.
I've replaced the internals and now works O.K ish
Price for the salt 12.95 ebay
price for the mitchell 5.00 plus 12.00 for the fixing of it.
Might just sell the mitchell on though as they are a collectors item in Australia (they like the left handed reels for some reason). I reckon i'll get 30.00 quid for it on fleabay then i'll get another Salt. SORTED

Re: what reels?

I am a serious lure fisherman for Bass. I fish on average 5 times a week. Sometimes its only for 15 minutes, other times its all day.

I can honestly say that reels used for plugging for Bass get hammered. Go near salt water with a reel, even if you wash it afterwards, will start to corrode from the inside out if it is not designed for salt water.

Last year I went through 3 reels in less than 4 months. I know have a Quantum Exo pt. Fantastic reel, ultra light and so far no problems with salt water. Down side is it costs about £200, which I can justify. However someone on a limited budget will be looking for a sick bag just thinking about that.

You wont get a reel that will survive in salt water for very long for £20, even a second hand one. But if you can find something like a Shimano Stradic second hand and wash it every time you use it and strip it down and grease it regularly, then you will have a great reel that should do you for a couple of seasons depending on use.

I've tried using freshwater fixed spools that i use for piking but due to corrosion isues i'd like something that is more resistant to salt.
Any reccommendations around the £10-20 mark or any old models that you would reccommend that i may be able to purchase second hand would be appreciated.
something like this ??
