Lures v wedges

Having never caught a bass on a lure or a wedge (and that's not for the want of trying I can tell you) I am curious as to the general opinions on lures v wedges in terms of results.

Having only just got into fishing I tried for many an hour (in fact probably more like days) last summer with dexter wedges, plugs and soft lures (the tsunami/sidewinder type) without success.

Any advice most welcome.

Re: Lures v wedges

I've had some luck with a plug, not tried wedges, thats not to say any type of lure is better than another. I think it's more to do with imitating bait fish and trying to get some life into your plug, wedge or soft lure.
First of all the bass have to be there, obvious I know, then get a set up your happy with. I use an 8' spinning rod and a 4000 size fixed spool loaded with 20lb braid. To this I add a 20lb clear mono leader 6- 8' with a small clip/swivel to attach the lure.
I try and find a location that looks bassy???? rough ground, gullies, anywhere you normally would expect to catch them on normal gear. I try to cover as much ground by casting accross the area in a semi circle. I vary the speed at which I retrieve, stopping sometimes, sometimes flicking the rod tip to add a bit of movement. It can be very frustrating, It's good to see fish chase lures, it really gets the heart rate up.
I've spent days trying, sometimes it works, more often I go home wondering what the hell I did wrong!
I'm going to try some of the soft lures this year, see how I get on with those. There are some good videos on you tube showing how certain lures work, worth a look. Hope it helps. Dont think Henry Gilby got anything to worrry about from me though!

Re: Lures v wedges

Thanks for the advice Steve.

I just like the sport of lure fishing and spinning I love. I love spinning the whole length of a big open surf beach like Woolacombe with a rod in my hand and water arroud my feet... each to their own I spose. Would be even nicer if I could something apart from scad.

Re: Lures v wedges

I do a lot of lure fishing for bass and have most succes with soft lures or topwater plugs. the best marks for bass seem to be weedy and rocky which is not ideal for spinners or wedges

Re: Lures v wedges

Thanks for that Mutley.

Quick question - do you use (and have success with) lures all year round?

Re: Lures v wedges

The deeper marks produce pollock in the winter months the bass seem to thin out towards the end of october and return at the end of june. Small mepps spinners can produce wrasse which are good fun on light tackle
