Fresh Mackerel catches the bigger ones.

Some of the Bass we have had over the last few seasons. We find the bigger ones fall to fresh Mackerel everytime.

12lb 4oz

8lb 5oz

10lb 12oz

One of 9lb and another of 10lb 8oz

Cannot remember the weight of this one.

A nice Brace for the table, caught on my old boat.

Good to know you can whip out a few mackerel early on in the boating session, and they will get you some good bass. Is it whole fillets, or do you use the tail section too as a kind of flapper?

We tend to either fish them as whole baits, dead and slashed a couple of times on each flank. We also often pick up a bigger Bass fishing 'Flappers' whilst trying for Tope.I know people tend to livebait Mackerel but in reality Bass are scavengers and will readily eat anything, dead or alive.A Mackerel, whole or Flappered lying on the bottom is an easy meal for them.
Fillets of Mackerel will catch them but are often attacked by Dogfish or Rays before the Bass get to them.If there is no or little Dogfish activity then a fillet (Hooked tail end first so it don't spin up in the tide) will fish quite well.

Re: Fresh Mackerel catches the bigger ones.

Thanks Ron, Its funny you know because my brother and a mate swear on catching small pout and using these as live baits, also they drift fish these over rough ground, they do do very well.
They also go out of their way to get pout as live joey's don't seem to work as efficiently.
Like you suggest it doe's work, depends on the location and type of area you are fishing, ie rough or wreck.
Its totally rediculous but there seems to be even a shortage of small pout inshore here now.
Thanks for info, will give it ago, see if it works in this neck of the woods, (I mean, sea.)

Re: Fresh Mackerel catches the bigger ones.

fishing for the big bass,i live line shad.and bunker.you need to free spool, let them run then put on breaks set the hook. The largest fish will take it,trust me the bass do not use knife and fork, they feed on macks and there moms did not cut it into chunks...easy to catch bait, need help, ring me up

Tight lines
and very light drag
