Bass sizes

Fished for Bass last week and a mate of mine caught 6 and put them all back as they where quite small, after taking my brightly coloured shock leader off my main line I also managed to catch 2 bass, the first one was small, same size as the other bass my friend had caught so put it back in the sea but my second bass was a bit bigger maybe 2lb ish but still put it back as I was not sure on exact weight, is there any rule of thumb on what size is good to keep ???
Tight lines!

Re: Bass sizes

10cm per year average growth rate in the uk, double that in the med, I tend to think it is wiser to take smaller Bass of about 3- 4lb, rather than a ten pound Bass, that has reached maturity and can spawn and reproduce.
Plus I think the big ones don't taste as good as one half the size, but hey, put them all back is the best choice of all because we have Mc Donalds now!!

Re: Bass sizes

Macky dee's is ok as they have the 99p deals but can't put a price on a tasty bass unless your a supermarket and I am not paying there prices lol.
Just nice to keep the odd one tho, makes all those hours spent relaxing on a beach worth while.

Re: Bass sizes

Hi Vorny, there's alot of talk about putting things back and being conservative, but when you see all the nets laying east to west and right upto the shore line its a wonder we catch at all from the shore.
So use your decretion and do what most of us do, keep one or two for the pot, i,m pretty certain its not a patch on whats being caught in nets!
Enjoy enjoy enjoy

Re: Bass sizes

people always make the mistake of throwing the small fish back and keeping the bigger ones which are actually the breeding fish !
If you wanna keep it then it must be within the legal size limit for Bass - this isnt negotiable

southern area minimum size limit for bass is - now upto 18" for the shore so ignore below

Re: Bass sizes

That's what I thought about the big ones Steve, as the Females tend to live the longest, will do exactly that chaos, keep the odd one for the pot but what I really want to do is keep notching up the species count.
Tight lines all!

Re: Bass sizes

the recomended retention size set out by the anglers trust (previously by the nfsa)was set at 41cm recently has been raised to 45 cm but the defra minimum landing size remains at 36cm . at this size they are juvenile as research indicates that bass start breeding at an average size of 42cm so therfore it makes no difference if the fish retained is minimum anglers trust size or 15lb. all are now potential breeding fish. so i just ask if you have a good days fishing dont be greedy and keep all sizable fish for the freezer, just take one or two for the table as they taste much better fresh
