Braid, lures and spinning Hello to everyone, I'm trying to get into spinning for bass so I've armed myself with a spinning rod, fixed spool and filled the spool with braid. Added to this I've invested in some lures but especially bought some sindwinder lures and rapala J9 and J11 lures. I know it's early for bass but I've been scouting out various locations at low tide and I've found a few likely spots around the Plymouth area, These are mixtures of rock gullies with sand, some weed but enough wave action to dislodge food. I'm hoping this means interested patrolling bass. What I want to know, is should I use a clear trace from the lure to the main line and if so what is the best way to tie braid to mono. It doesn't seem right to mix the two but I'm open to ideas. ![]() Cheers

Re: Braid, lures and spinning braid straight through works best for me, its nice and supple so dos'nt impede the lures action. sounds like you've scouted out some nice marks, good luck mate. __________________ The marquis de sade dont wear no boots like these

Re: Braid, lures and spinning Cheers for the reply. I'm hoping that the season is going to hot up. I'm working on the arrival of sandeels as being the main marker. Again, cheers for the help.

Re: Braid, lures and spinning As said before don't use any shock leader. I aleways attach braid to a small qui k link swivel so I can change the lure quicker. Bass will also hit your lure before taking it. They do this to stun their prey so don't strike just keep reeling in. tj

Re: Braid, lures and spinning I dont know the plymouth area atall but in the thames estuary it is always the arival of peeler crabs that herald the start of bass season, although i firmly believe the bass stay all year round and just modifiy there feeding habits to suit the available prey. a mate of mine had a 12lb bass grab a good size flounder in january, landed both the spawny git. __________________ The marquis de sade dont wear no boots like these

Re: Braid, lures and spinning Yep. keep things simple. I use 30lb fireline crystal braid, small snap swivel and a j13 repala (silver/black). I always upgrade the trebles on the repelas for sharper, sturdier ones after i had a string of near double bass spit out the lures. I you are fishing in shallow water with lots of rocky snags I would go for a less robust hook as better to bend and replace a hook getting free of a snag than to lose your lure I did see a couple of guys catching bass on angelsey last weekend using a bubble float, 3-4 foot of trace and sand eel. just gently trotting the float back. only smallish bass though up to 3lb

Re: Braid, lures and spinning The use of livebait is another avenue I intend to have a go at. From what I've read, a sandeel or ragworm, clear trace and possibly a small split shot weight then cast and retrieve is also a good technique. I also want to try a bubble weight and small peeler crab. Thanks for all the advice.
