Cool Baits for Barbel

With the new season just around the corner, I'm thinking of Barbel fishing.

Does anyone have any tips for Barbel baits and or any rigs to use. I prefer float fishing for them but realise that the bait needs to be hard on the bottom.

Any help would be appreciated

Re: Baits for Barbel

Well, as yet I haven't fished for barbel. But what I've heard too be good is luncheon meat, halibut pellets, elips pellets and corn. As well as caster/worm and maggots. Hemp is a great attractor apparently

I think the best way too catch them is with a swimfeeder, but if you're float fishing, I guess you could use 1 of those float swimfeeders?

Cool Re: Baits for Barbel

Cheers Dan

I haven't fished for them for a while, but I have heard that a local lake stocks them. What is the fishing World coming to when river fish like Barbel are being stocked in lakes Barbel are designed for big powerful river systems not commercial puddles.

Righ off the soap box now, so casters, hemp and sweetcorn plus good old luncheon meat still work then...phew thank christ for that.

I must admit I do like the attractor qualities of trout and halibut pellets.

I'm going to give my local lake a ring to see if I can get a bit of practice in before the start of the season

Thumbs up Re: Baits for Barbel

I use hook size 8 or 10 air rigg hooks. Then i put some John roberts pellet rubber band holder for the pellet to go on the air rigg. I use a Kamasan feeder black cap 50g

For hook bait use 14 mm Marine halibert pellets. And then use 3 mm Marine halibert pellets in the feeder. It always seems to work for me.

Re: Baits for Barbel

When using worm on commericial fisheries I find that there are a lot of false bites. Dont think you can go wrong with some luncheon meat ledgered on a size 10.
