Re: Any good spots near Norwich area?

I used to ledger luncheon meat but to get the best results as far as barbel are concerned there are only a few pegs I would go for, and they are the deeper areas. One in paticular has a hole that holds a lot of barbel. If you cast just to the ledge of the hole the ledger rolls down and takes about 12 turns of line off the spool before hitting the bottom, then I just wait for the rod to go round, which is not usually long although I must say I havnt fished the pleasure lake this season as I always fish top lake which is a match lake but I have caught good numbers of barbel to about 4lb season after season.

Re: Any good spots near Norwich area?

hi, the best barbel spots round norwich are in my humble opinion are the wensum at taverham mill which is very shallow and weedy but its easy to spot individual fish and also has a lovely mill pool holding some very big barbel and chub.unfortunatley this strech is on a syndicate but u can fish free a little downstream if u are willing to climb through the bushes. it really is a great strech of river with lots of cover on the banks which the fish love.

Also try Costessey mill pool which is free fishing but probaly doesnt hold the same numbers of fish.
I have caught a lot of barbel from the river round these areas and my main tips would be to travel light and be prepared to move around and find the fish.Often if u are quiet u will see fish and its an idea to bait a number of swins with pellett and hemp and fish all the swims in a day. Hookbaits i catch most of mine on either good old luncheon meat(use Sensas spicy meat if u can ,it stinks and stays on the hook very well) or a big halibut pellett.

hope this helps and we do have great barbel fishing in this area if you work at it.

good luck!!!!!!

Re: Any good spots near Norwich area?

try the lenwade stretch near the bridge pub tickets for here are £5a day purchased from the pub some good barbel from this stretch
also the lyng stretch has some cracking barbel i,ve seen then over 16lb from this stretch but you will have to guest (poach ) this stretch as its run by naca .
they norwich stretch below hellesdon mill to the gatehouse public house is free and i,ve seen them out of this stretch to 12lb
also the costessey mill pool does produce some good barbel from time to time but the private stretch below the pool has the better fish in .
and one of the top spots is taverham mill where a few years back produced the british record for a while to a local school teacher but agian this stretch is private and will cost about £160 a year and i think theres a waiting list there are other area,s but the fun of fishing is really finding good spots for yourself but i hope this give you a bit of a insight to the quality of the wensum.

Re: Any good spots near Norwich area?

Hi all i live very local to hellesdon mill and have personally seen a 15lb barbel come out of the hellsdon mill stretch alone but there are bigger ones in there as i witnessed the environment agency electro fish a stretch there a few years back and weighed a barbel at 19lb so they are in there just need catching!!! as far as bait all the ones that have come out recently have fallen to either big halibut pellets or luncheon meat. hope that helps
