Barbel Tackle Help

Hi.
As some of you already know I'm fairly new to this site and haven't done much course fishing in the last 30 years as I have been concentrating on game fishing. As I am vertually living with one foot in the Severn (4 mins away) I would like to get back into proper barbel fishing and not catching them by accident when salmon fishing.
Question is about rods. ( Got no money to buy new stuff, so the wife tells me!)
1. I have an old 11ft ABU Specimen rod I used to use for salmon worming years back. Is it ok for barbel? or is it a little too stiff. Bearing in mind I've had barbel to 12lb on it and salmon to 18lb, I know its capable of handling big fish.
I also have a 12.5ft Greys Specialist Worm and Shrimp rod. This is a hand made salmon rod which again I've landed barbel to 7lb on and salmon to 14lb. Great for freelining. Would this be ok?
I've also found a 10ft ABU Conolon light spinning rod. I think its rated for 15lb line max and about an ounce casting weight. This again I have used for seatrout and salmon spinning and worming. Great through action with a light tip. Any good? ( I can seee the wife using this one!)
2. Line strength. I very rarely go below 10lb for salmon on the Severn and usually use 20lb or 30lb braid. A little bit heavy?
I'm ok for reels, I have a Shimano 6000 and a Cardinal 754.
Any comments would be most welcome. G

Re: Barbel Tackle Help

Doubt if I'll ever catch one if I'm actually fishing for them tho!!!!lol
I've had some monsters over the years but I didn't take too much notice of them. I hate to say it but a lot of salmon fisherman think they are vermin...... oooh dear, shouldn't have said that on here..... Me, I didn,t mind catching the odd big barbel, chub or pike, it made my day. After all I just like catching fish! You don't go salmon fishing on the Severn if you like catching a lot of fish.....or any fish!
Must say over the last 10 or 12 years, I've noticed a bit of a decline in the amount of barbel we caught. Maybe the've moved out of the runs we used to fish. Mind you, the EA worm ban before the 16th June for Salmon fishing has stopped a lot of people even fishing for Salmon.
Just looked back in my record book and I had the big un at the beginning of April 1991.( 20 years ago..) No way can I fish that stretch for salmon with a worm that early now.
I've had monsters on the lower river wier pools too, but like I said we didn't really appriciate them as we were out for salmon.
Just a thought, the Greys worm rods imho would make great rods for barbel, especially for freelining a lump of meat . They still make them, I believe. Cracking action and they can cast really light baits.
I've got quite a few tackle ideas we use for salmon worming that might work for barbel, I will try and get out and try them and if they work I'll post them.
G.

the barble arnt as prolific down your way now the wye is the river round symons ect,,,as for your rods seem ok as long as they arnt broom sticks barble never give in as you know and would be a shame to loose one under tip the abu is just the job i only know the conlon as a sea rod so not sure ,pellets usualy sort them out in bewdly and crab boilies ,,have you had a go for the carp in the river by you wait till after a match then av a look down the side some monsters its said they get out ov larford wen it floods

Re: Barbel Tackle Help

There used to big a good shoal of carp at Atcham years ago a couple of the Salmon lads had some bosters on worms. Theres a few lurking round here too. I've had a couple out of one of the lower river wierpools too as well as good barbel, bream, chub, pike and zander. Like I've said, as soon as I start fishing for them I won't catch out.
Don't get me started on the barbel in the Wye........
