Fishing at tewkesbury river tomoz, need advice

hi on wensday i went to tewksbury river, for the first 4hours i was float fishing but wasent having much luck so i started ledgering for the last hour,in that period i got about 10takes,but alot of the fish i hooked broke of,i believ this was because i was using size 16 hooks,i think thats abit small what size should i try tomorrow.
BTW ill mainly be fishing on maggot after barbel, chub and perch but on wensday the first fish i hook was a pike lol on double maggot but i was not expecting it i thought it was a nice barbel untill it surficed then rolled and cheed cleanly though my line, but anyway what hook should i use.also ill post the pics of the fish i catch tomorrow

hooks dont brake mate unless they are old so i would look at your knots and the lb of your line or your lines age

no,lol when i say brake of i mean the fish unhooks himself, which is why i think a bigger hook might be better, the hooks dont brake lol soz the way i wrote it is misleading sorry.

basicly ''broke of'' in my book means:unhook its self/maybe not hooked properly.

read my last post soz,i didnt mean broke of as the hook braking i ment it as the fish unhooking himself, which is why i feel a bigger hook could help.

Re: Fishing at tewkesbury river tomoz, need advice

you need to scale your hook to the size of your bait and the size of the fish you want to catch,
if you are using maggots a 16 should be ok but if you start to use pellets, boilies ect you will need bigger hooks, i use 11 with 8mm pellets and a 8 for 14mm boilies as a rough idea.
when you make your rigs put the bait on and try to imagine the fish taking it and whether the bait itslef would obstruct the hook point

Get size 12's and 14's in barbel specialist and you won't go far wrong, maybe some 8s and 10s for using with meat direct on the hook. Also the smaller the hook generally the better the hook hold in my experience - I use 14's for 2x8mm pellets or 10mm and 12's for everything else except meat when I don't use a hair.
