Throop Fishery, Dorset

Can anyone give me some tips on how to get the best out of a proposed Barbel session on Throop Fishery in Dorset?

Baits, known swims etc, would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Throop Fishery, Dorset

I haven’t fished Throop for quite a few years but I used to spend a week down there each year with my mates. We used to stay at a good bed-n-breakfast on the road alongside throop mill which gave us packed lunches each day and had a tackle shed.

The places that produced most barbel for us were below the wier and along by Barbel Corner.

A good place to see what and where the Barbel are being caught is the Davis Tackle < fishery News > web site page.

Most of the usual Barbel Baits used to catch us Barbel at Throop such as Luncheonmeat, Worms, Spicey Boilees, Pellet Paste and using Hemp and Caster with a small sprinkling of corn as feed.

Simple uncomplicated rigs with smallish leads were the order of the day with leads of ½oz to 1oz which trundled a few inches each time we raised our rod tips was the method that worked best for us.

I caught my first double of 11¼lb at Throop back in 1979.

But as I said it has been many years since I last fished there.

good luck & tight lines

Re: Throop Fishery, Dorset

Throop split into 3 beats. Beat 1 is shallow and weedy with one deep bend and overhanging tree. Beat 2 from the wier down is fast and deep for 70 yds then a submerged wier slows things down. The first swims through the gate are good. Further down is barbel bend can be fished both sides All the way down to the bridge at the start of beat 3. The pipe bridge and the bend below are good swims. Some good chub as well as barbel to be had. Maggot feeder and halibut pellet favoured but have had good results with lunch meat. Areally nice place to fish but can get busy.
