| My first Barbel - River Culm One of my proudest moments in fishing occured last Friday when I landed my first Barbel. A work mate and I headed for an afternoon/evening session at the Culm, near Killerton. Was maggot feeder fishing on one rod and hair rigged luncheon meat on my bonus rod. Throughout the afternoon and tea time all I was getting was minnow, minnow, minnow, minnow, minnow...... minnow and a couple of dace. At about 7pm, I heard a bit of drag go off on my bonus rod. My mate laughed and said it was probably an eel. (He knows how aggravated I get when I catch an eel! ... Then the drag went like hell! Because I cast upstream the Barbel swum towards me and had an easy landing. It weighed in at 9lb 4oz Here's the pic: ![]() My mate also caught another Barbel (7lb 3oz) about an hour later. We've been there a couple more times since last Friday but have blanked. I am aware that Barbel are rare in the Westcouuntry? I've spoken to a few people and they have blamed otters. Is this really the case? |

NB. Unfortunately a couple of members have reported seeing an otter on our river last week and both swear that it was not a Mink; so we are praying that they where wrong. __________________ My Web Site (The Average Coarse Angler) Happiness is Fish Shaped (It used to be woman shaped but the wifes getting on a bit now) |
