Re: My first Barbel - River Culm

What a stunner for a first fish. If anyone knows what it feels like to fish for ages for these then it's me. Had two now but I wouldn't mind reckoning that yours would run the pair very close on weight .

Nice one.

Well, to be honest. I'm quite an inexperienced fisherman, so I haven't put many hours into fishing the culm. I've only fished it for a few months.

Had a few dace, one cracking 3lb Chub which had a gill missing, and two Barbel!

Re: My first Barbel - River Culm

That's a fantastic fish! I'm after one of those beauties myself.

I had a six and half pound chub from the Killerton stretch this week on breadflake. I fished the large bend just down from the car park at the bridge below the mill. I know there are some big barbel in there because I was talking to a guy who hooked one but lost it the week before.

There are a few nice swims on that stretch. I believe that on that large left bend, where it slackens off, there are some nice carp and tench too.

I'm thinking about small pellets as a feed with a halibut pellet hookbait on a hair to tempt the barbel/chub?

Breadflake/crust is great but there are thousands of minnows and gudgeon in there constantly attacking the hookbait!

Re: My first Barbel - River Culm

Biggest chub i had was 3lb down past the weed raft. Was out there on Sunday & a pike bit my feeder off on the left hand bend. I'll have to go out big fish hunting!

Re: My first Barbel - River Culm

It's certainly fishing well at the moment. Lots of good swims to choose from. Reed raft? Where's that?
