Re: barbel and chub fishing

i went out the other day chub fishing, fished through daylight with centrepin caught a few small chub and grayling.i thought i:d give it a few hours into darkness, with a bait i have been fishing on the {secret squiral] side for over 18 months.its peeler crab, to use it i go for a long shank size 2 then wrap bait elastic so its firmly on.i had 2 chub to 4half and a 6 pound barbel in temps of 39 f.i started using it after fishing a southern river were i found a 3 pound dead cub so i gutted it and found soft back crayfish.i would reccomend gutting dead fish, like trout anglers have a tool that they push down the throwt to see what flies have been eaten.it works on northern rivers.

Peeler Crab? sounds an excellent bait to use for Chub & Barbel. I have used Prawns since the late 70's and in those days no-one else seemed to use them other than Salmon anglers (unlike today) and they worked brilliantly with no prebaiting, also in those days anglers used to use the small native Crayfish with a lot of success (before they were endangered by foriegn crays); so I can see why you caught Chub & Barbel using a small softback peeler crab Picky.
I might get a few next time I am down by the coast and give them a try.

NB. Picky, Perhaps you should have started a new thread about your Softback/peeler Crab experience and we could have asked if anyone else has used softbacks for coarse fish with any success - instead of adding it to the end of someone elses Post (sorry Jamie).
