Re: reel info for barbel

Very happy with my Okuma epix pro - super smooth & comes with 3 spools . Though would like the baitrunner version if only to click on while I take a leak , always like to keep my hand on the rod when barble fishing ( that sounds so wrong ) . having said that I'm sure a whiskers played on a centerpin has to be the most fun if you can get your bait to the fish .

Re: reel info for barbel

I use my old 'Shimano Aero 5010 GT 'or my 'Shimano Aero GTE 5000B or my OKUMA Sheffield Centrepin and they all perform great, I have read some good writeups for the OKUMA baitrunners as well.

Re: reel info for barbel

I usually use a 'Shimano Aero GTE 5000B' fixed spool reel for Barbelling but this season I have caught well over 50 Barbel (so far) up to just over 9lb on the centrepin while fishing a couple of streams in Hertfordshire, it's great fun and a lot of Barbel specialists use a pin for rolling meat or trotting a float but you need to be confident in how to use one.
But If I am not fishng a stream and am fishing a medium to large river then I use a fixed spool which is easier for me to cast while seated.

A 9lb 3oz Barbel caught on the Centrepin this season.

Re: reel info for barbel

nice fish .
Do you have the line coming off the top of the reel when rolling meat , i find this a much better way of control

Re: reel info for barbel

Hi Nick,
I tried the line coming off the top as I know it has advantages, but I couldnt get used to turning the handle clockwise (or batting away from the body) when retrieving line on the pin and turning the handle anti-clockwise when retrieving with the fixed spool so I have the line coming off the bottom.
