 About ****** Time Too! It's been a long time coming.......... 11,128 days (give or take the odd day)..... over 30 years!!! But hey, who's counting!  September 1978 I had a Barbel weighing 11lbs 06oz, a mighty big fish for those days! But that remained my finest Barbel until today! Now, I accept I packed up fishing entirely for about 13 years (and it's difficult to catch if you're not actually out there!  ) but 17+ years is still a long time to wait!Here she is:  This pristine Dorset Stour Barbel weighed in at 12lbs 05oz and has just made my 2008/09 Season. As far as I'm concerned, this fish eclipses the monster chub I've had and even the 4lb Crucian Carp from Marsh Farm. Having looked at the weather and river conditions over the last few days, I decided to specifically target Barbel from an area I knew should hold them. The first two hours trotting a float produced not even a flicker but a change to a maggot feeder, two maggots on a #16 on a fairly long 3ft hooklength did the trick on the second cast in  . A very dogged and solid fight lasting about 20 minutes eventually saw my mate Roger slip the net under the beauty.I can only apologise to "Twiddler" for just topping her magnificent fish of last year by just one ounce! It was Roger Hill's fault, he weighed it, kept me in suspenders for far too long, and then announced the "scores on the doors".Excuse me while I crack open a bottle or two....  __________________ "I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order" Eric Morcambe     |
