Red face Quick Barbel session on River Severn

Trying for a Severn Barbel

Well first day of my holidays it was a quick attempt to catch a barbel on the river Severn above Tewksbury.

Bait
Grubber boilies
Grubber 5mm pellets

Tackle
Hair rig
Greys barbel rod
Braid line
Running swimfeeder / running ledger

Well as I’ve done no Barbel fishing in about 20 years I thought I would see what I could do about rectifying that this year , so with a weeks holiday it was time to wet some line.

Chosen water was the River Severn just above Tewksbury, which is a big fat deep stretch of the River Severn.

So with all my bits packed I pointed the car north and off I went. The plan was to use my smartcast fish finder to see if I could find any features along a 1 mile long stretch of the River Severn and then stick out some bait and see what I could catch.

As you can see from the picture above to try and plumb ever peg to find some gullies in the River Severn bed would take years the old way so I pulled up my car at the start of the mile stretch and whipped out my Smartcast fish finder only to find out that the batteries were flat …… you could hear my language back in Gloucester. But my fault so …..

With no way of finding any marks I just plumped for a peg the looked comfortable fishing.

Well out went the baits and a glorious 4 hrs later nothing even though I did try quiet hard , which is unusual for me ! Mind you could not tell if I was getting a knock as the wind today was mad and the tip was jumping about no matter what I did.

Here is a few picture of my rig

So no fish but at least I got out and will give it a go tomorrow again with new battery’s

Re: Quick Barbel session on River Severn

No barbel hey? Spunds VERY familiar. I am going to break my duck before the year is out and it will be on the Severn.
