Great Barrier Island Hi all, I have just come back from a most awsome fishing trip out to Great Barrier Island on the charter vessel Beyond Limits, myself and nine other guys met at Gulf Harbour on Friday afternoon and set out for Great Barrier with skipper Dan at the helm. We stopped of at Kawau Island for a couple of hours, caught several small snapper, then headed off for our night time mooring at Bland Bay, Great Barrier, quick scollie dive then Cooked up some supper in the gally and tried to catch some yellow tail for live baits, the whole bay was full of squid, we could only manage to catch one of these but they did look awsome when the baits hit the water and they scattered. What followed was two full days of crazy fishing. All up we landed about 200 snapper to 15lb one monster travelly at 13lb, some gurnard and a few ocean trout. We saw dolphins, whales, penguins and lots and lots of gannett work ups. We dived for and collected 300 hundred scollops, 100 for each day and it took three of us less the 15 minuets in 12 meters of water, they tasted great. we fished live baits, smelly baits on ledger and strayline, slow jigs (no good) and soft plastics (best results so far). Took heaps of pictures but can't work out how to upload them (Grrrrrr) http://http://www.fishing-forum.info...ead.php?t=2452 Last edited by Kiwi Angler; 01-29-2009 at 12:13 AM. Reason: add pictures

Re: Great Barrier Island Top post Kiwi , those snapper are a lot bigger than nr. Sydney. Was this place in the Bay of Islands? I also looove those scallops with the orange roe (in Oz they call the Tasmainian Scallops) so much tastier than the tropical ones from Qld. Surprised you didn't get many squid, try using the Jap Yo-zuri/Yamashita Jigs they ALWAYS work. __________________ Chris

Re: Great Barrier Island Thanks, Great Barrier Island is at the entrance to the Hauraki Gulf - Auckland, the marina we sail from is just 20 mins from my house and the trip takes less than 2hrs, you can fly there in under 1/2 hour on a small plane. My M8 did the trip from Auckland in a 14ft tinny - not my idea of fun, it can cut up rough in the channel. Hope to have another post to put up after the weekend, we are off to the other cost and the Mighty Kiapara Harbour.
