places around the south coast??

ive been to a lot of places around the south, and my biggest fish was caught in hamble, about a 1 1/2lb bass... and then i get some people that come down hamble for a few minuites and pull up a 5 lb bass!.. so are there any places around the south where you can catch ray's, doggies, and fish above the 2lb mark? and also what bait to use. thanks...

Re: places around the south coast??

Hello Dan.
Where to start?
Big fish i m afraid are not that easy to come by mate but if you put the time and effort in then it will pay off.
The best advice i could give to you would be to try and fish darkness, not easy at the age of 13 i know but beaches here on the south coast are generally dead in daylight and come alive at night.
Virtually all my fishing is done in the dark.
Maybe you could join a club???
As for fishing marks well theres loads, the hamble is good for Bass day and night, moving out theres warsash which can throw up big Bass in darkness.
Hillhead is fishing well for ray at the moment and is also throwing up the odd stingray,
Stokes bay for dogfish at range on fish baits and theres always bits and pieces to worm baits.
Gillkicker,Hasler wall old portsmouth, eastney etc etc will all fish well for small stuff at night but if you want big fish then ats a waiting game using large baits close in at any of the mentioned marks.
I dont know the area but southampton must have some deepwater marks you can fish??
If you can find one thats deep and the water is coloured then it should fish ok during the day, give cookoo a pm its his area.
Stick at it mate and the bigger fish will come
PS have a look at www.solent fishing guide.com for loads of info on local marks

Re: places around the south coast??

I know this is abit of an old post now but if you are still looking for marks to fish for large Bass and Rays there are plenty of good spots around Southampton. I would say that if you can mainly get out during the day, then you should try Lepe at Gypsy lane for a good chance of a decent sized Bass! If you can get out for a night session then try around Beulieu, Parkshore for Smooth hound and Stingers around this time of year. Also if you can travel a little further afield then Hordle and Barton On Sea are both producing good sized Rays at present. One of my favorite places is Milford shingle because it is a good deep water mark and you never know what you might catch down there.

As for baits, try Peelers for Smoothies and at the moment Sandeels seem really good for Rays, although Mackie and Rag combos have been good. Lepe try close in with whole squid for Bass. Hope this helps.
