Just moved to Brighton any tips for a lost guy?

Moved from Cheshire last week, went out for the first time today to the small breakwater in Brighton near the carpark.
Parking is a nightmare here and I only stayed an hour or so, I wasn't sure I had parked in the right place and was worried about being clamped.
Can anyone recommend a good Mackerel or Bass spot near Brighton (within 20 miles or so) where parking isn't as difficult and its safe for kids to fish?

Not my area, but someone from that area should be along soon. I think Ollie (FlyingFox) fishes Brighton Marina quite often...maybe worth pm'ing him.

id say your best bet is brighton marina for the macks and bass and probably the best place to take your kids as there is no real need to cast far plenty of space to fish and loads of freindly anglers! i'll send you a link to a site that may help you out for future trips down there and lets hope you have many good fishing trips down this way

Thanks very much for that Ollie, much appreciated. Its really daunting the sheer amount of marks here after coming from Cheshire. My only options there were 25m drive to the Mersey or 100m drive to north Wales. The sea is on my doorstep here, I'm like a kiddie at Christmas.

Try here for Marina reports http://www.brightonmarina-seafishing.co.uk/ , latest news is the the Western Arm is closed at times over the next few weeks. Bear in mind it's very busy at this time of year with the tinsel-tossers and asylum seekers. Quieter spots are Peacehaven, good chance of Bass, particularly near the 'pipe', but you'll lose a bit of tackle as it's rocky. However, get there at low tide and you be able to collect some crabs My fave is Newhaven harbour arm, not far away and is quieter than Brighton marina at night.

Cheers Rob, any chance of a road name for Peacehaven? I had noticed all the foreigners in the Marina, whats all that about are they fishing for food or to sell it? If that's what they are there for I'm glad I don't have to do that or I would be very poor and very hungry!
I find some of the gangs of foreign people a little intimidating when I am on my own. I am a photographer with some very expensive digital SLR's and won't carry them with me to the Marina anymore for this reason. Pity really as there are some good photo ops there and a lot of saleable images.

I don't want to get into the whole foreigners fishing, it's a bit of an emotive issue, however some of the people on the Marina are simply holiday-makers, but I've heard a few horrible tales from people who fish there.

Anyway-Peacehaven! Head out of Brighton on the A259 towards Newhaven, a few miles and you'll enter Peacehaven. When driving through, look for a carpet place on the right. It's on the corner of Steyning Avenue, turn into there and drive right to the end. There's a car park next to some houses, it's free. To the right there's a ramp that leads to the beach or a set of very steep steps, I'd recommend the ramp, especially coming back! By the way Newhaven is only a couple of miles past that on the A259, the harbour arm there is fun to fish from

Not sure if you like your beach fishing as much but if you do id suggest you give the beach on the east side of newhaven harbour a go (tide mills) nice beach dont have to cast far and a good chance of catching some nice fish! if ya interested in catching macks gars or even some golden grey mullet then maybe worth a crack!! hope to be getting a session or two in there myself in august/september so i would be greatfull for a lil report if ya take on the idea lol

Thanks Rob and Flyingfox, I am going to nip out later this evening I think. Is there any particular time / tide state to fish these venues? I love all fishing, I used to do a lot of fly fishing in Cheshire and I am hoping to do so here too for Bass. My species list has changed a lot here. Common fish in my old venues were Cod, Whiting and Doggies.
Bass are like gold dust and Mackerel pretty hard to come by too.
The fishing around here seems to be the total reverse of Cheshire which makes things very interesting.
I love the Brighton area, the scenery is so much better here but I notice that many of the local spots are plagued by litter which is a real shame.
Were I come from the anglers seem to have a little more respect for the environment and it would seem the holidaymakers make a big impact on your local beauty spots.
I have been fishing from a beach by shoreham way, its down past the NTL building were all the surfers go but I am not having much luck. I cannot find anywhere else that has available parking so thats been it so far. I did fish the Marina last year on the arm near the flats and had about 20 mackerel on the float which was fun but that was when my brother had a flat in there and I had fee parking :)
