Re: conger spots

Lol,if you dont fancy sitting all night waiting for the non existent Portland eels ( commercial boys have fished the buggery out of the place ) and catches don't even come close to what they were except for the big wrasse off Pulpit etc..
Closer to home i hear Newlyn harbour is a good bet for eels but look for and rough ground deep water marks around the top end and its a case of suck it and see !
Should be back down in May for a week so the rods are comin and the kids can stay at home.

I doubt its a deliberate attempt to catch them but i know the majority of them end up as pot bait however they are caught and i know loads of strap eels are taken in lobster pots ..
Swanage bay is another prime example and even worse the nets stretch along the bay within casting distance from the pier and atleast one of them is owned by a member of the local angling club !
There are no doubt other factors but i know "the hole" just off Portland still holds loads of eels and bullhuss and the wrecks around there still have them but look at the reports form the area and talk to local charter skippers and they all say the same thing....i'm just repeating it lol !

I assume by your replies you have an "interest" in commercial fishing and im not saying its standard practice but the fish aint around the bill as they once were .

I jumped the gun a bit as i thought you meant they had actually targetted the conger with nets,LOL does the member of the angling club weigh in some good "Rod" caught specimens???? I have a little experience of commercial fishing and have set lines for eels once or twice which is why i was surprised at what i thought you meant about netting conger.

Re: conger spots

I'm not from your area, but apparently the River Tamar at Plymouth is the place to try, the current british record of 68lb coming from there. I know a few members of another forum fish their regular for conger.
