Re: Morning All - Newbie looking for advice! hey paul sorry i didnt notice this thread! ok it all depends what dates you are goin to lavernock! let me know and i will check how big the tides are! the tidal range here goes right up to 43ft! which is so big that on these tides we get a channel bore (like a 2ft mini tidal wave which has been surfed for a mile in the past - is actually a british record for the longest wave surfed! weas over 40mins i believe! - thought i would throw in a free cr@p fact for you all) anyway - 6oz is indeed the maximum you are gonna need. if tidal flow is any stronger u utilise a shore method of uptiding! this involves casting slightly left or right INTO the tidal flow. then leave it have as much slack as it wants as the lead sinks and swings round. you will have a big bow of line now - wait till the bow is infront of you (normally only tackles a minute!) then tighten up! you will now be anchored straight in front of you! if it keeps springing outta the bottom tighten the grips on the lead or even swap to a fixed grip lead rather than a breakaway lead. lavernock point is actually alright for cod! also known for conger and bass this i believe is a very rough ground mark so expect to lose rigs. smoothhound come from this area aswell and if ur goin this month its not too late to target these. use peeler crab - fish at night for best results. all of these marks are dangerous though - most of the welsh coast is lethal to be honest so just take care. the channel has the second biggest tidal range in the world andd freak swells frequently occur. hope u have some luck mate

Re: Morning All - Newbie looking for advice! JuanPablo/DevonDave, Thanks a lot for the info - blimey it sounds like a scary place!! As for dates, we'll be there from Monday 25th thru Friday 29th probably .. 6 oz is OK - but I'm not so sure about the rough ground!! Are there any other venues nearby that are a bit less treachorous? Or do we need to head for the English side? This is no problem, we can travel round once we're there as much as we need to. Do you happen to know if there's somewhere locally where we can get peeler, or should we look to bring it with us .. ironic, really ... get it shipped from Devon to Deal, then ship it back down to the West Coast LOL. Anyway, I'm off on me hols for a week now, so please don't think I'm being rude if I don't get back to any info you can pass on over the next week. CheerZ Guys, JB.

Re: Morning All - Newbie looking for advice! Morning Chaps, I'm back after a very pleasant week's doing very little in Tobago .. a little browner, and a little fatter! Did manage to get out fishing for a day, which I'll post up about later, but in the meantime, JuanPablo, if you could let me know about some marks I'd be most grateful, then I can start planning my trip for the 25th of this month - can't wait! Perhaps we should all start posting up our favourite spots in the "local fishing pals" area, then we'd have a great reference when fancying somewhere new to try; What do you think? CheerZ, JB.

Re: Morning All - Newbie looking for advice! hey john-boy a visit to south wales at this time of year wouldnt be complete without fishing witches point. its a venue with a big-fish reputation all-year whether its conger, bass, cod or rays! i have lifted the directions from another website so i hope they are correct and make sense! Witches point stands out proudly from Dunraven Bay. The point is to the left of the bay with Ogmore Deeps located a short distance to the right. The deeps offer similar fishing as witches point incidentally. The point is one of the regions top venues and hence can become a little crowded, especially in March and April. There are a number of locations to fish here: 1 Ð Right hand side of point (4 anglers max), 2 Ð Central Rock Platform (4-6 anglers) and the ledges facing Wick Beach (6-8 anglers, although not to comfortable). Fish can be caught from all these marks although the outer point ledge to the right hand side of the point is very popular. At this mark beware of the rock finger which sticks out from the point. Good fish will see this and aim for it when retrieving, keep the pressure on and rod tip high and try to steer them away from this as we have seen numerous fish lost to the ledge.Ê Rays are the prime target species here although dogs bass and codcan be caught plus large double figured congers frequently show up here to large fish baits. Other fish include whiting, pouting, rockling, small turbot, occasional plaice and also mackerel, garfish and mullet in calm conditions. Best baits Ð Sandeel & crab although black lugworm and squid works well in the winter. Parking Ð In beach car park. The point can be very dangerous and numerous people have been washed of the ledges in rough conditions. Only fish here when it is calm, do not try to venture out if it is blowing. Never ever fish Witches Point or Ogmore Deeps in a strong South Westerly wind. The swell WILL wash over the point and will probably take you with it! The venue holds some excellent rays throughout Spring when the conditions are correct. When fishing the point the rip can be hard to deal with. On tides over 12m (Swansea Scale) it will be hard to hold bottom for 1.5hrs of the flood, 6 oz fixed grips leads will help. Top baits are quality frozen eel for the Rays with squid cocktails also producing. Parking is available at the Beach car park and access can be gained via a walk over the top of the hill Last week I heard of a 12lb thornback and some 9lb small-eyeds from this area and some rumours of codling starting to show on night tides. Hope this helps mate.

What a variety of fish available too .. marvellous. Do you reckon you'll be about when we're there - perhaps you could join us for a session or two - that's be great! Even if it's just a session of LOL.CheerZ, JB. |
