Third World Fishing (A journal) I'm in the Philippines and I guess I'm as addicted to fishing as the men and women in this forum. I would like to share here my fishing exploits with the minimal tackle on hand thus 3rd World Fishing. Just in case you find yourself in our archipelago...remember that you got a friend over here. I own a small outrigger boat I named January for my saltwater inshore fishing but I enjoy driving my moped scooter and scout for deltas and estuaries for mangrove snappers lately. Happy fishing and a friendly handshake. ~Mike~ ![]()

Re: Third World Fishing (A journal) On the way to my honeyhole... I live in Dumaguete and at least in this part of the Philippines we have staunch defenders and better management of our marine and coastal areas in comparison with that of the major cities of the country. So I guess I'm pretty lucky with my location. This is me on the way to one of my honeyholes. Cheers! ~Mike~ ![]()

Re: Third World Fishing (A journal) Thanks bros! Here is another vid of me hunting down a mangrove snapper in pure freshwater +/- 700m above sea level, 6 km "upriver" from the estuary. My fishing buddy Ja targetted snakeheads on this spillway pool of a dam upriver but instead he caught a mangrove snapper. He was puzzled and I also got very curious when he told me about it. Excited to know how far this snappers can thrive upriver in pure freshwater, I tried it for myself. Note: This is a long video but it is more of a journal and an opportunity for viewers to also enjoy the countryside as I skip from one spot to another...third world fishing style. ![]() My next trip back in the dam spillway... I finally landed that mysterious freshwater snapper in the area...and I now believe they do thrive in pure freshwater and swim far up ![]()

Re: Third World Fishing (A journal) That was what I thought at first but after extensive reading I am made to believe the snappers swim upriver acclimatizing stage by stage until they are fully adjusted to pure freshwater... when it rains hard they ride the river down to the estuary to breed and the juvies swim back again. __________________ For a man to admit a distaste for fishing would be like denouncing mother-love or hating moonlight. - John Steinbeck

Barramundi Quest I haven't caught a barramundi yet and I really want to... BUT I have to take a bus to an estuary where there are reports of barra in the area (its a 4 hour travel but that's the closest I can find). Anyway, this is my quest to hunt one of the fishes in my wishlist... Happy fishing everyone. ![]() __________________ For a man to admit a distaste for fishing would be like denouncing mother-love or hating moonlight. - John Steinbeck
