| 65KG Giant Siamese Carp Landed By Steve From England. I met up with Steve from England, brought him to BSR to experience his very first mekong catfish and at the same time aim for Siamese carp. He was lucky that we managed to help him landed a 65KG Siamese Carp today at BSR. | Re: 65KG Giant Siamese Carp Landed By Steve From England. As John has posted up the pictures here's a report to go with them which might be of interest. I paid for two rods, one to target the Siamese Carp and the other for the Giant Mekong Catfish as they use different methods. The basic bait is chicken feed which comes in a 50kg bag and is a light brown fine powder. For the cats vanilla additive and water are added to make a dry mix. This is fished in an orange sized ball on a coil, about 4/5 feet below a large running float; the hook is a 3/0, bare about 3 inches below the ball. The cats attack the ball and eventually suck in the hook and you're off. I had 16 on the day between 15 and 30 kgs and they don't half fight; I must have lost another half dozen or so. One of the difficulties is netting them as you're fishing from a pier and you have to stop the fish getting under and entangled in the structure. The carp use the same basic mix but with prepared maize added and the hook popped up with polystyrene balls. The ball is about the size of a large grapefruit and fished on the bottom. Nothing happened all day and I kept myself amused with the cats but about 4pm I finally had a hit - I knew it was big but not as big as it turned out. After a struggle I got it to the side and the inevitable happened - under the pier it went. Fortunately there was a remedy for this eventuality and in went the bait boy with the rod and after about 10 minutes he reappeared on the other side of the pier with the rod and a clear fish which we now managed to get in. To put things in perspective I was pretty lucky to even get a carp, and extremely lucky to get one of that size. As for the cats they reputedly go to 100kgs - the biggest I saw come out that day was 40 kgs. After that I was totally knackered and it was beer time. The fishing in Thailand is not cheap and this day cost about 150 pounds - that included guide, fishing permits bait etc. John the guide had given me a breakdown of what it would cost when I booked so it didn't come as an unpleasant surprise! Talking of John he did an excellent job and did everything he could to ensure I caught as much as possible. He picked me up at the hotel 0730 and we were fishing by 9am. I could have fished longer but after that carp anything else would have been an anticlimax. |

| Re: 65KG Giant Siamese Carp Landed By Steve From England. No disrespect to you guys but I have live in Thailand for a few years now I do find people having ther photo taken with large fish from Bung Sam Ram a bit of a joke. Its a bit like paying a far a good looking bar girl, then having your photo taken and then tell all your mates back home you have just pulled it. They think your a Gaza but in-fact your have payed top dollar for the privilege .I know I am a new member and I don't want to get off on the wrong foot but come on guys ,own up to the guys back in their homelands that any Muppet can catch fish from these places, especially with the help from the Thai guides .What fishing in Thailand is about is hunting down native fish in the back of beyond,I have every respect to the guys who catch wild fish,no matter what size.Give me 2 or 3 Pla Chon from my local wild waters to a day of pumping out fish after fish of one of these heavily stock fishing parks anyday. . |

| Re: 65KG Giant Siamese Carp Landed By Steve From England. Its true anyone can do this and it's not hard. Catching the wild fish is very hard. 1000 times harder. Thats partially because many Thai's dont think about sustainability. Wild waters are overfished. The fishing parks are jammed full of fish. Catching big fish is like shooting fish in a barrel but they are so much fun to catch when they get really big! Fishing parks are one way Thailand can bring about sustainability. |
