Sorry mate, but that's absolute tosh.

Goldfish are a species in their own right, although many varieties exist.

The Wild (Brown) goldfish Carassius auratus has been naturalised in Britain for many years - not as long as the Common carp, but a darn sight longer than Grass carp.

Earlier in your post you said the forum list should be taken from the British Record List.

Quite. If you take a look at that list, there you will find a record Goldfish, at some 5-odd pounds.

I'll look out the link for you

Here it is
Welcome to www.nfsa.org.uk

Click on British Record Fish in the lefthand menu, then on Listings, and finally Coarse fish in the sub-menus

I may be mistaken Vagabond, but is,nt Carassius the latin name for Crucian Carp & the Aruatus taken from from the latin aurea meaning gold? Not sure about the British record fish lists. Just thought it would stop any arguments.

Re: Species Hunt 2007

Carassius (upper case C) is the Generic name for both because both are considered as belong to the same genera. Each has in addition a SPECIFIC name. carassius (lower case c) for the crucian, and auratus for the goldfish

Thus Carassius carassius Crucian
Carassius auratus Goldfish

Just as a Pike is Esox lucius but its North American cousin the Muskellunge is Esox masquinongy

Talking Re: Species Hunt 2007

I stand corrected. I,ve just been looking at the record fish listings link that you posted. I,ve heard of most of the freshwater species, but there's some weird & wonderful stuff on the Sea listings. I loved the latin name of this one LOL BOGUE (Boops boops) Certainly going to have fun on next years species hunt tracking some of those down.
It also looks like the sea lists may be growing longer judging be the stuff being caught in recent years aparently due to Global warming.

Re: Species Hunt 2007

Well I suppose it is time I got organised for this years species hunt, I am looking for a species hunt partner for the 2007 hunt and wondered if there was anyone else looking out there.

It will be my first full year of fishing and I enjoy coarse fishing more than sea fishing but try both. I will be moving to Dorset, the Poole area, in the next few weeks and need the motivation to keep on fishing.

Re: Species Hunt 2007

There seems to be a lot of bickering about different freshwater species going on .
Would it not be easier to ban all freshwater fish and just make this a sea fishing thing?

Tin hat on

Re: Species Hunt 2007

I thought it was a fun thing, we have a list of acceptable fish to try and catch that count for points, let's just go for it.
